History  of Perumal Temple

The temple boasts approximately 350 inscriptions from various dynasties, including the Chola, Pandya, Chera, Kakatiya, Sambuvaraya, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara, reflecting the temple’s evolution and the political landscape of Kanchipuram. Renovated by the Cholas in 1053, it expanded under the reigns of Kulottunga Chola I and Vikrama Chola. In the 14th century, additional walls and a gopura (gateway tower) were constructed by later Chola kings. During the Mughal invasion in 1688, the main deity was temporarily relocated to Udayarpalayam for safety. It was returned after 22 years, with the assistance of local preceptors and General Todarmal. Notably, during the colonial period, British General Robert Clive visited the temple and presented a valuable necklace, now known as the Clive Maharkandi, which is adorned during special occasions annually.
